Rachel Halverson

Associate Professor of German

During her academic career she has studied and conducted research frequently in Germany. She specializes in post-war and post-Wende German culture, film and literature and has published on the Historikerstreit, and works by Jurek Becker, Thomas Brussig, Günter de Bruyn, Martina Hefter, Wolfgang Hilbig, Tobias Hülswitt, Hanna Johansen, Hermann Kant, Judith Kuckart, and Siegfried Lenz. She is currently working on the interplay between narrative strategies and identity in autobiographies published by East German authors following the Wende and the evolution of young German authors from students of Creative Writing to successful publishers of viable literary texts. Professor Halverson was awarded the WSU Honors College Faculty Award in 2002, the Goethe-Institut/American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) Certificate of Merit in 2005, and the Ray Verzasconi Pacific Northwest Postsecondary Teacher of the Year Award (PNCFL) in 2008. She is a member of the WSU President’s Teaching Academy and has served on its Board of Directors since January 2007. Additional service to the profession includes president of the Washington Chapter of the AATG (2004-2006) and president of the Washington Association for Language Teaching (WAFLT) (2006-2007). She currently is the Awards Chair for the Washington Chapter of the AATG and is completing a three-year term on the AATG Executive Committee as Presiding Officer of the Chapter Presidents. In addition, she is a member of the AATG Culture Taskforce and has been an active member of the Goethe-Institut Trainernetzwerk since 2001.
