French Program Information

The study of French at WSU not only provides a comprehensive and practical understanding and use of the French language, but also develops intellectual curiosity, critical thinking skills, and appreciation of the humanistic context of international, especially French-speaking, cultures.

WSU’s program in French includes language courses from the elementary through the advanced level, as well as courses on French and Francophone literature, film, and culture, all taught by native or near-native French-speaking professors and instructors. WSU’s Language Learning Resource Center (LLRC) in Thompson Hall provides all foreign language students access to both Windows- and Macintosh-platform computers, plus stations for video and audio tape use.

Students may choose from a minor in French or  a B.A. in Foreign Languages with an emphasis in French, in either the Teaching or Non-Teaching Option. Students who have studied French in high school or elsewhere and receive a B or better in a higher level course at WSU may be eligible for Advanced Placement Credits (details on the Advanced Placement page of the Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures web site at ). A reminder, too, that a minor in French requires FREN 101-204 (or equivalent proficiency) plus 3 additional courses, one of which may be one of the new courses on French film, culture or literature taught in English. A limited number of credits may also be applied from study abroad to the major or minor in French.

Students who want to study abroad in a French-speaking region are advised to start French language study at WSU **EARLY** (freshman year if possible). Good progress also should be made on completing GERs and major core courses prior to the study abroad experience (usually Junior Year). Speak to any of the French faculty about study abroad, transfer credits, and major/minor requirements.
