Elizabeth DeHaas
Graduate Student - Spanish
About me
My name is Elizabeth, but please call me Betsy. I’m from Idaho, however living in Ecuador for over a decade has made me part Latina at heart. I believe life is a journey and it takes a special gift or developed talent to focus upon the adventures of the moment. My passion has always been people. I am a passionate student and teacher, a life-long learner with an open heart and open mind toward others, their beliefs, world views, and what I can learn from them as well as impart. My purpose in pursuing this program is both educational and personal. Having taught a variety of subjects at various levels both in the U.S. and Ecuador, I decided it was time to follow my original dream and specialize in Spanish through the in-depth study of literature, foreign cultures, and learn some French as well. I would love to be able to communicate better with my little French niece!
Areas of Interest
People, culture, history, literature, photography, cinema, food, art, interpersonal communication, and matters of the heart. Having studied and taught English Literature I am aware of the cultural nuances and historical understanding of a people or a region that can be gained through reading. Working through this program will provide new insights and understanding to the Spanish and Latin cultures. It will also help me improve my pedagogical practices as a language teacher!
