Professor of Russian (Ph. D. in Russian linguistics, University of
Washington, 1990). Prof. Dong’s specialty is Russian sentence
structures, ellipsis, and teaching Russian as a foreign language. He has
published several monographs and many articles on Russian syntax in the
US, China, Russia and Europe. For the last several years he has worked
in collaboration with Prof. Zoya Proshina at the Far Eastern National
University in Vladivostok, Russia, on Crossroads, an English-Russian
dictionary of East Asian Culture Contacts. The dictionary came out in
September, 2004, and won a medal at a regional book fair in Vladivostok,
Russia, in October, 2004. His new project is a Russian-English
dictionary of Chinese, Japanese and Korean words in the contemporary
Russian language also in collaboration with Prof. Zoya Proshina and
Prof. Herbert Coats at University of Washington. Prof. Dong has also
established a summer program leading 20-30 WSU students to China to
teach English. In addition to Russian, Prof. Dong teaches some advanced
Chinese language courses.
